What is the story with Rory mcilroy? Is he nationalist or unionist or does he really care?

I ask this because it's so hard to judge, he has represented Ireland at every level, he has made some comments that suggest his irishness yet there is suggestions he wants to represent gb in the olympics 2016 and his website is plastered in ulster banners. When he won the us open the commentators claimed him as British. It's so typical of the English to hog other countries sports stars and claim them their own (andy murray, Greg rusedski etc). I am from the republic and i know it's a backward question but I need to get more info on this!
